WHAT WE DO

JUVENILE HALL CULINARY CLASS

TO DATE, 36 STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED OUR CULINARY CLASS WHILE INCARCERATED

Our 10-week culinary program inside Los Guilicos Juvenile Hall gives youth real time in the kitchen — learning how to cook, work as a team, and take pride in what they create. Youth take on complex recipes that challenge their palates and introduce them to foods and meals many have never experienced before, expanding both skill and curiosity. Along the way, they earn their ServSafe certification and build relationships with professional chefs and local mentors from across Sonoma County.

Each class ends the same way: we sit down together for a family meal. Breaking bread at the table connects us, builds trust, and turns a group of individuals into a team. Offered up to four times a year and reaching up to 48 youth annually, the program helps youth leave custody with more than skills — they leave with confidence, job connections, paid work opportunities, and people who continue showing up after release.

GARDEN & AQUAPONICS PROGRAM

The garden at juvenile hall gives youth the chance to get their hands in the soil — growing and harvesting organic produce right where they live. They cook with ingredients they’ve picked themselves, learning where food comes from and what it means to care for something from start to finish.

Along the way, youth build food knowledge, environmental awareness, and leadership through shared responsibility, patience, and pride in what they’ve grown.

PAID WORK PLACEMENTS

Through paid furlough jobs in local Sonoma County restaurants, youth get to start working while they’re still inside. These are real shifts, real paychecks, and real people showing up for them during a vulnerable transition.

REENTRY MENTORSHIP

We connect youth with trusted mentors who show up consistently and bring real lived experience. These relationships start inside juvenile hall and continue after release, offering steady support when it matters most.

In partnership with From Ashes We Rise, healing circles create space for youth to slow down, reflect, and build trust — with themselves and with others. This support doesn’t stop at the door; it carries with them as they return home.

Healing begins in simple, powerful ways: being listened to, being supported, and knowing someone sees you and believes in your future.
